Chicago White Sox defeat Minnesota Twins 6-1 – MLB Update
Zach Stewart tossed effective innings on Saturday, August 6 to help the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 6-1 at Target Field.
With a resplendent pitching spell, Stewart had the second consecutive win for the White Sox, paving the way for a sweep in the series.
Asked as to how he executed it, he put it very simple. "Pretty much my usual game plan, just go out and try to throw a lot of strikes and attack the zone, and get them out," he said.
Even though it was a smooth win for the White Sox starter, he did not conceal how he felt when the game began. "A little nervous at first, but usually once the game gets going, it kind of goes away and just back to the same old stuff," Stewart said.
So strong and solid was the pitching spell, that even the rival team’s manager had a word of praise for it. "He worked quick, he attacked the strike zone," Twins’ slugger Jim Thome said. "At times he would go from 89 to 93, 94 a couple of times. He pitched
a good ballgame."
Saturday’s game was effectively an encounter dominated by the pitchers. The Twins’ starter made a good start with a scoreless inning which was reciprocated by Zach Stewart’s an equally solid spell, allowing no run to the Twins’ hitters.
Both pitchers kept putting up pressure on the respective teams’ offence, disallowing them to open their bats. The strategy worked out quite effectively and proved to be quite overwhelming for the Twins as they had lost the first game of the series as well.
The game remained scoreless up until the fourth inning, but took a turn in the fifth when Carl Pavano came for pitching. Paul Konerko was the first one to score a single for the White Sox following whom Adam Dunn had the second to double the lead.
Stewart kept the lead intact with his fifth inning shut-out but gave up a run in the sixth inning to Danny Valencia who singled to centre to bring the lead down to 2-1 for the Twins. With the lead maintained, Chris Sale threw a shut-out eighth for the White
Sox.
When Glen Perkins relieved Pavano, the Twins’ pitcher was subject to big hits. Alexei Ramirez scored a run on an error, Paul Konerko snapped in a single and Brent Lillibridge scored a homer to take the lead to 6-1 against the Twins, giving a safe lead to
the White Sox.
Coming as a closer, Sergio Santos threw a shut-out ninth inning to give the White Sox a comfortable 6-1 win, the second in the series against the reeling Twins.
