Chicago White Sox defeat Oakland Athletics, 4-3 – MLB Recap
Alexei Ramirez hit a solo homer and scored the game-winner, as the Chicago White Sox exploded for a 4-3 victory against Oakland Athletics in the finale of a three-game series, at Overstock.com Coliseum, in Oakland on Sunday, May 15.
Carlos Quentin drove in a run while Omar Vizquel tallied two hits and a run scored for Chicago, which has won three of their previous four games. Mark Buehrle allowed three runs on seven hits with three walks and six strike-outs over six innings to earn
the victory.
Coco Crisp hit a solo home run and notched two runs while Daric Barton drove in two for Oakland, which has dropped three of four contests.
Trevor Cahill was beaten with his first drop of the season after allowing four runs and two earned on 10 hits over seven innings.
Chicago got on the board in the fourth inning when Ramirez' took a shot over the left-centre wall for a 1-0 lead and his fifth homer of the season.
"It feels good to get this win and gain some momentum for going home," Ramirez said. "I always feel like it's going to be a good day. It wasn't Cahill specifically, I just try to find the right pitch and make contact."
Crisp knotted it in the bottom of the fifth on his second round-tripper of the season, but Chicago went ahead again in the sixth inning.
Ramirez led off with a single and rushed to second when Adam Dunn followed with a walk. Ramirez went up a base on Paul Konerko's fly out and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Quentin.
Chicago extended its edge to 4-1 in the seventh inning. It happened as Alex Rios led off with a double and came home when Vizquel reached base as a result of a bad throw to first by Cahill. Ramirez then singled home Vizquel late in the inning.
The Athletics made it 4-3 game in the bottom of the seventh inning, as a straight one-out single saw Buehrle leave the game for Jesse Crain, who got Crisp to hit into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. After Crisp stole second, Barton punched
a single to centre to score both runners. After Conor Jackson singled, Josh Willingham struck out to end the inning.
Crain got the first out of the eighth then Matt Thornton took the control and struck out David DeJesus, but Mark Ellis singled. Landon Powell flied out to end the inning.
Sergio Santos walked Cliff Pennington to start the ninth inning. A sacrificial bunt from Crisp got the runner in scoring position and Pennington went to third on a ground out from Barton. After Hideki Matsui walked, Willingham grounded into a fielder's choice
to give Santos his fifth save of the season.
