Chicago White Sox defeat Seattle Mariners 9-3 take series 3-0 – MLB Update
The Chicago White Sox surpassed the .500 winning percentage yet again after annihilating the Seattle Mariners 9-3, helped by a six-run sixth inning, at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Sunday, August 28.
Seven of the nine runs for the White Sox came through two brilliantly crafted efforts; a three-run home-run in the fourth inning followed by a Grand Slam in the sixth inning. The Mariners, as the story has been this season, were kept at bay by the White
Sox till the eighth inning to further widen the gulf between Mariners and victories.
Jason Vargas’ ability from the mound cannot be challenged but his inability to convert quality starts into wins has come under scrutiny this season. The left-handed starting pitcher threw in three precise innings before a lapse in concentration in the fourth
allowed the White Sox to take the initiative and Vargas was never allowed to reorganize.
Dayan Viciedo unleashed his arms in the fourth inning for a three-run homer, allowing Paul Konerko and Alexei Ramirez to complete their runs. The hit distanced 405 feet towards centre field and gave the White Sox the required momentum to set the tone for
the game.
The White Sox made a brilliant play once again in the sixth inning. With Konerko, Alex Rios and Viciedo acquiring bases safely and Tyler Flowers at-bat, Vargas missed the target once again and was hammered to the left field for a Grand Slam. The hit ascended
Chicago to a seven-run lead before Gordon Beckham and Juan Pierre added a run each in the same inning for the scorecard to show 9-0.
Vargas was the unlucky pitcher to concede all nine runs amid ten hits in 5.2 innings. His lacklustre pitching, evident from nine errors during this stretch, handed him his 12th loss of the season with just seven wins to his credit so far.
Gavin Floyd was impressive for the White Sox and won his 12th start this season after leaking just two runs in 7.1 innings. The relief pitchers were tidy and closed things safely to complete a 3-0 series whitewash over the Mariners.
