Chicago White Sox grab 3-2 win over New York Yankees – MLB Update
The Chicago White Sox came from behind and took the outing away from the New York Yankees by 3-2 to snatch the second-straight game at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday April 27.
Chasing a one run deficit in the eighth inning, the White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko launched a two-run grand slam and the catcher Brent Lillibridge grabbed two splendid catches in a row to save the Club in the ninth inning.
The Sox manager Ozzie Guillen had such confidence on Lillibridge’s abilities that he brought the player off the bench and then planted him in right-field. After the game, Guillen remarked highly about the Lillibridge saying, "I found my closer. We know he
can play the outfield really well."
Chicago’s starter Gavin Floyd, who gave lead generating homer to Robinson Cano in the second, kept his fast-balls back on the mound. After receiving a blow, Floyd pitched two shut-out no-hit innings, but went out of the park again in the fifth, this time
off Brian Gardner’s bat.
His overall performance was so impressive that the skipper kept him on in the sixth and Floyd made a phenomenal come-back keeping the Yankees hitless. Floyd continued to toss fast pitches, did not consume any hit until the last inning and took ten batters
for his third win of the season.
Matt Thornton relieved Floyd in the ninth inning, tossed just seven pitches for a walk and Guillen relieved him immediately before he gave away any run. The closer Sergio Santos might have gone for a run if Brent did not make a terrific catch of Alex Rodriguez’s
opposite-field drive for the second out.
The diving catch also impressed Rodriguez, who has thought of clearing the boundaries. Rodriguez said, "Two incredible plays. Very courageous dive, because if the ball tips off his glove, the game's over."
The game was in favour of the Yankees as they gained an early lead while starter Ivan Nova held the Sox hitless in his first four innings. Nova gave a tying run in the top of the fifth, but Gardner immediately washed away Nova’s fault, touching a lead gathering
homer.
The Yankees’ reliever David Robertson tossed a scoreless hit and increased the pressure on the opposition. Rafael Soriano relieved Robertson in the eighth and tossed 18 strike pitches before he gave a two-run homer that provided the Sox an opportunity to
grab the game. Chicago did not let the Yankees past and snatched the win to take 2-0 lead in the four-game series.
However, Robinson gave away the triumph, but the Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi was still pleased with Robinson’s effort. Girardi said. "Tonight's the best his velocity has been. He just made a mistake to Konerko," the manager added. "Let's not forget he closed
out 45 games last year in a tough division. I haven't seen anything that tells me he can't handle New York."
As the Yankees’ batting line-up crashed, Girardi has hope for come-back in the remaining two games of the series.
