Chicago White Sox lose to Detroit Tigers 4-7 in series opener – MLB Update
Chicago White Sox lost to the Detroit Tigers 4-7 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Friday, August 31 in the opening game of their three match series.
After taking a humiliating series loss against the Kansas City Royals, Jim Leyland and company regrouped themselves to snatch a thrilling win against the American League Central Division rivals.
In some ways it was an extremely important win for the Tigers who closed down the gap between themselves and the White Sox to just two games on Friday. This is the time Leyland had been waiting for since the start of the season. If the Tigers can manage
to beat Chicago in all three games of the series, they will take the first place on the AL Central standings.
"If it is the last weekend of the season, you might start pressing but not now. There's a month left and we're in first place," Kevin Youkilis said.
"This is not going to make or break the season," Ventura said. "But we're happy to be playing in games like this."
White Sox, on the other hand, will be looking to make some adjustments in their game-play to avoid another embarrassing series defeat. Robin Ventura and his men were hit hard by the Orioles in their previous series and it will be interesting to see if they
can put things back on the right track in Game 2.
Starting pitcher Jake Peavy was hit hard by the Tigers as he gave up six runs and nine hits in six wavered innings to take his 10th loss of the season.
"I wasn't real sharp," Tigers’ starting pitcher Dou Fister said.
"I didn't have much at all, so it was a battle from the start to just keep us in the game," Peavy said. "I got through the sixth, but it wasn't like I had great stuff in that inning, either."
A.J. Pierzynski homered to right as Paul Konerko and centre fielder David Wise also made useful contributions with the bat but the Tigers were too hot to handle at Comerica Park.
The Tigers will be happy with their performance as they managed to dominate the White Sox and take an impressive victory.
