Chicago White Sox to sort out a few things before Winter Meetings – MLB News
While the Chicago White Sox are faced with a directional decision before the Winter Meetings, as the newly hired manager Robin Ventura said on Thursday, December 1, that he would like to retain a few players to keep the team strong.
The names that popped up for that are that of Gavin Floyd, John Danks and Carlos Quentin. But for all that, there is a dire need of carrying out hectic efforts, which the new manager is willing to do.
The Chicago White Sox, it is important to remember, could not win the laurels of their fans. It was rather heavy criticism on how the team played throughout the season, being underachieving squad at worst, something they wanted to avoid.
Nonetheless, the shortcomings, the team manager thinks, can be overcome. To do that, the aforementioned players must be placed in the roster. Since all three players have arbitration eligibility, but being in the last year, the White Sox want to make a quick
decision on it.
"Obviously, I would love to be able to hand the ball to John Danks 30-plus times and Gavin Floyd the same thing and have Carlos [Quentin] in right," said Ventura. "It's kind of a wish list, but it's not always going to be able to happen.”
But all the decisions shall be made at the upcoming Winter Meetings. With Spring Training beginning next year in the February, Ventura has a lot to sort out for the White Sox.
"I think it will be decided [at the Winter Meetings]. I've kept in contact with [White Sox general manager] Kenny (Williams) when different things come up. And I mean, I don't think he knows. I don't know. That's the interesting part about going there."
The Winter Meetings are one of the occasions when the flurry of activity actually leads to the ultimate decision as to which players will be part of which team. The White Sox efforts to retain their certain players are understandable given the lack of options
they have in terms of buying new players owing to the big sums of money involved in hiring them.
