Chicago White Sox veteran catcher A. J. Pierzynski files for free agency – MLB Update
Chicago White Sox veteran catcher A. J. Pierzynski wants to explore this year’s free agency market. He has filed for free agency which will give him negotiating rights of his potential future in the Major League.
According to some media reports, this was decided by Pierzynski during the season that he will test his free agency during the offseason. Though many still say that he will not be going anywhere, but some inside sources do claim that if he gets the right and lengthy contract anywhere in the league, he will surely think about it and might leave the White Sox. He has spent almost seven years with the club since coming in 2005.
This news was also important as new White Sox general manager Rick Hahn has already speculated in the media that the 2013 Major League Baseball season will be a great surprise to all the other competing teams.
He has already re-signed starting pitcher Jake Peavy for next two years while many experts also believe that he will also establish some kind of mutual understanding with Pierzynski’s agent and will try to get him to agree to stay in the franchise for some more years.
“There aren’t a lot of free agent pitchers out there, There is fair amount of money perhaps to be spent (by) other clubs, so that one is going to be a challenge. Pitchers get paid a significant amount. Jake -- given his track record and especially his 2012 season (with 31 starts and no health issues ) -- will be a pretty popular guy," Hahn said regarding Pierzynski’s developing story.
He added with more detail, “It is hard to separate the two, Seeing Mark Buehrle leave last offseason ( was difficult ). We stand by it from a baseball standpoint, being able to maximize the effectiveness of our payroll.”
Pierzynski is a talented player and knows his worth in the league. He finished this season achieving .278 hitting along with 27 homers, 77 RBIs and .326 OBO. While his career hitting of .284 along with 155 homers, 730 RBIs and .324 OBP also makes him a good role player for any team.
