Question:

Chicago to Aruba airfare problems?

I'm going to Aruba this Christmas. I'm trying to find airfare for a good price ($400-$500 roundtrip), and I'm having trouble. I tried Orbitz and Expedia and other websites like that, American Airlines, Delta, and United Airlines, and everything is really expensive. My travel dates are from December 25th to January 1st.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks for your help.

  1. $400-$500 is probably not realistic for travel over Christmas. That's one of the most heavily traveled periods of the year. It's not uncommon for discount seats to sell out many months in advance. And, fares are usually higher to start with because of high demand. Plus, airlines have aggressively raised prices this year because of record high fuel prices.

The lowest that I can see for these dates is $599. If you can't afford that, you may want to consider looking for a cheaper destination or changing your dates away from Christmas.

You may want to try Priceline's "name your own price" feature or Hotwire. It may not help, but you could get lucky. However, you don't get to pick the airline or departure time with either of those websites. You get whatever they give you and it's nonrefundable, so you're stuck if you're not happy with the flight schedule.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

  2. It looks like the lowest discount fares are already sold out.  That's not unusual for the holidays.  If your plans are flexible, you might find a lower price earlier in December or later in January (I saw one available on December 15th), but I didn't see anything lower than $679 for your specified dates.
