Chichi Scholl slays Zuzana Ondraskova to cruise into round two – Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2012
American qualifier, Chichi Scholl, devastated Czech Republic’s Zuzana Ondraskova with a bagel at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2012, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International tournament held in Bad Gastein, Austria. She jolted down a 6-3, 6-0 victory
against the Czech veteran to breeze into the second round on Wednesday.
Scholl displayed her best tennis to outmuscle the Czech veteran in one hour and 26 minutes. Encountering each other for the first time, the qualifier not only edged in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Ondraskova but also booked a spot in the round
of 16 at this red clay court tournament.
The 19-year-old made a drastic start on these Austrian clay courts and suffered the initial blow in the opening game to trail at 0-1. However, she made a spectacular reply and went on a five-game killing spree, eventually leaping to a 5-1 lead. Apart from
squandering her chance of pocketing a breadstick, Scholl held her serve once more and clicked the opener with a 6-3 win.
Ranked 190th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Scholl maintained her intensity in the proceeding set. She blasted powerful groundstrokes and reeled off the all six games in a row, subsequently pulling out the set with a bagel.
Summing up the teenager’s performance, Scholl clobbered a lower first serve share of 52 per cent as compared to her opponent’s 60 per cent but impressively marked 19 out of 30 points on it. She also fully capitalised on more double faults the Czech spilled
and capitalised on six out of eight break opportunities to earn the fame.
Next up for the American is the conqueror of the match between sixth seeded Irina-Camelia Begu and the German challenger, Kathrin Woerle.
The tournament’s top seed, Julia Goerges, faced a bitter fortune. She suffered a 6-3, 3-6, 3-6 shock against the Dutch qualifier, Richel Hogenkamp.
"Today I played without any pressure," Hogenkamp said after clinching the match against the top local star. "I tried to make it as tough as possible for her, and I'm happy I won."
Hogenkamp will next face the Spanish challenger, Estrella Cabeza Candela, in the round of 16.
