She stands with her tail down and the back of the tail is hunched up.

I think she has a problem laying eggs, shes only about 6 months old. She seems like she has a belly ache and pops out an egg with no shell and then the soft shell comes out 10 seconds later, and then shes fine, but is standing around today again looking like shes in pain.

I would really like to know whats wrong with her. I only have 3 chickens.

Please help

  1. apparently young hens have this problem sometimes when first starting to lay, usually it doesnt have a egg shell, They need shell grit to make their shells go hard, get some shells from the beach and smash them up or buy some from your local feed shop for it, I thought it may be egg bound but as she is passing them she should be okay

  2. Souynd like you should take to a veterinarian

  3. roast it

  4. It sounds as though you need to take your chicken to the vet asap.

chickens that are hunched up are  always ill. .

as i cannot see the chicken this is  bit of guess work and the process of elimination. .

are you giving her grit/oyster shells?

because a chicken will need that in order to lay eggs and also to digest food . . .  with out the oyster shell the egg will have a soft shell like in your situation.

has she got a place in which to lay her eggs? (a nest-box)

Is she under stress from the other hens ?

(example being bullied/ pecked at?) becasue that will often result in soft shelled eggs

personally  I would put her in a nice quiet place . . . and keep an eye on her . .  just for about 24 hours and then if she doesn't get better or starts to deteriorate i would go straight to a vet.

also are there any other symptons?. .  Is she eating? drinking?

check her droppings if their is blood it is most likley to be coicodis . . . if that is the case go to the vet straight away with a stool sample. .  and if caught in time the condition can be cured. =)

she could aldo have an inflamed oviduct! ;)

but then again and Hopefully It is most likely to be her laying her very first egg. . . .that will settle down after a few days . .

any how if she does appear any worse  within 24 hours go to a vet or an experience poultry person =)
