Chiefs eying Romeo Crennel, Jack Del Rio, Joe Philbin for head coach slot – NFL News
The Kansas City Chiefs are looking for a new coach and their eyes seem fixed on Romeo Crennel, Jack Del Rio and Joe Philbin. Crennel has the strongest chance of them all and has proven much to deserve the job.
The Chiefs had fired their coach Todd Haley when their team had plummeted to the bottom of the AFC West going down to 5-8. Haley failed to come up with a repeat performance of last year when the Chiefs had clinched the AFC West
title. The decision meant that a new coach was needed and instead of bringing in a new coach for the remaining three games, defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel was appointed the interim coach.
Chief’s general manager Scott Pioli who made that decision had then still wanted to reach the playoffs and had his eyes fixed on Crennel for delivering. Crennel had wanted to be the permanent head coach from the very beginning.
And he made his desire public as well. However, the Chiefs could not manage to reach the playoffs, but nevertheless the team fared much better under Romeo in the last three of its game exhibiting a completely changed outlook.
Crennel is a strong contender of the head coach position having had worked as the head coach for Cleveland Brown. His work with the Browns saw him gain a contract extension but he was relieved the following year after his team’s
performance declined to 4-12. He left the Browns unmoved and determined to make his way as a head coach. However, he ended up as a defensive coordinator but now once again has the chance to be the head coach and surely will not compromise on the opportunity
available.
Scott Pioli too has indicated that Crennel is one of the candidates for the job saying he would definitely be interviewed. Pioli even spoke of the respect that Crennel enjoys in the locker room.
"I know the respect Romeo commands in the locker room," Pioli said. "We talked with Romeo and I think he's someone we're definitely going to be talking to."
The Chiefs started off to an amazing start under Crennel beating the unbeaten Packers 19-14 in a game that had every one surprised. The Chiefs rebounded from having lost five of their last six games. And the courage that Crennel
showed was impressive.
"Everybody had marked it off as a win for the Packers, but those guys in the locker room, they're football players. They decided they were not going to lay down, they were not going to give up, so they went out and played a tremendous
game." Crennel said.
So he had his chances increased but could not repeat the same performance in the next game against the Oakland Raiders which his team, lost. However, a victory over the Denver Broncos in the season’s finale has his hopes brightened
again.
Coming up with two victories despite injuries to key players like Cassel, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki and Eric Berry is a big achievement. He now has two players openly supporting him. Those players are Tamba Hali and Bill Muir
who have voiced their support of Crennel.
Crennel during his tenure as the defensive coordinator proved to be one of the best in the league under whom the Chiefs defence became their greatest strength.
Among the other contenders for the head coach position are the former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio and Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. However, at the moment Crennel appears to be the strongest
of them.
