Chiefs forward Liam Messam disappointed by defeat against Crusaders - Super Rugby News
The Chiefs’ forward, Liam Messam, is disappointed over their loss at the hands of the Crusaders in Napier, during a Super Rugby match on May 21st. The Crusaders beat the Chiefs in a nail biting contest with a score-line of 25-19. Liam Messam’s
had the last try which was followed by a conversion by Stephen Donald in the dying moments of the match, won a bonus point for Chiefs but they could not carry the day.
The defeat has also terminated Chiefs’ chances of playing in the final of Super Rugby. The Chiefs will have a bye next week followed by three more games in the tournament. Even if the squad manages to win all three matches, the results from here onwards
cannot see them into the semi-final stages.
The Chiefs have been placed 10th overall on the point’s table after they have won just five games after 13 outgoings in the ongoing Super Rugby season. Eight defeats have shattered their dreams of playing in this year’s playoffs.
Talking to reporters today morning, Messam expressed his deep disappointment over the defeat and said, “It's very frustrating and I guess just very disappointing on our own behalf. We weren't up to standard tonight and I just don't think the boys were there
[mentally] at the end of the day. Siti [Sivivatu] nailed it on the head after the game.”
The Chiefs were playing well against the Crusaders at the interval but they could not stop All Blacks legend, Dan Carter, from doing formidable damage. Carter contributed 20 points to his team’s victory.
Messam further said that, “To be 6-all coming into halftime we just needed to get our hands on the ball and play the sort of rugby we've shown in the last couple of weeks but at the end of the day the Canterbury boys put us under a huge amount of pressure.”
Despite knowing that Chiefs are not in the championship, Messam was determined to fight in the remaining matches of the season. He rejected the criticism and said his side performed reasonably well.
