Chiefs outscore Lions five tries to three as Lions lose sixth game in row
Chiefs outscored Lions five tries to three as the visitors secured a win at the Ellis Park, Johannesburg.
This is the Chiefs second win in the Super XV as they defeated the Lions during the Super XV round 10 encounters on Saturday April 23, 2011.
Lions have won a single match in round 04 encounters against the Cheetahs. Lions have lost nine of the ten matches they have played and today’s defeat was their sixth consecutive loss in the Super XV.
Chiefs started the match strongly but Lions recovered the ball and attacked the Chiefs try lines. Return of the Lock Franco Van Der Merwe to team strengthened Lions who were continuously asking questions from Chiefs defence. Chiefs were holding up to the
Lions attack however conceded the penalty during the 11th minute of the game.
Lions Fly Half Burton Francis kicked the penalty successfully to score the first points of the match. During the 16th minute, Burton Francis scored again on the penalty to extend the lead by 6 points.
Chiefs recovered the ball from the Lions and worked the ball into the Lions half. Chiefs Flanker Scott Waldrom scored a try during the 21st minute of the game. Chiefs Fly Half Stephen Donald missed the conversion as the ball rebounds off the post.
Waldrom scored his second try of the game during the 29th minute followed by the Donald’s conversion to put the Chiefs in lead for the first time in the match. Lions came back strongly with their Full Back Michael Killian’s try followed by Burton Francis
conversion to take the scorecard reading 13-12. Chiefs ended the first half with a seven-point lead courtesy of the last minute try by their Lock Romana Graham followed by Donald’s second conversion of the game.
Lions started the second half as Burton Francis successfully kicked penalty during the 43rd minute to reduce the lead to just 3 points. Chiefs Prop Toby Smith scored their fourth penalty in the game to extend the lead to 8 points. Chiefs Centre Dwayne Sweeney
scored the fifth try during the 53rd minute followed by the Donald’s conversion to take the scorecard reading 16-31 in favour of Chiefs.
Lions reduced the lead with the substitute Josh Strauss try followed by Francis conversion during the 62nd minute. Lions enjoyed more ball possession and penetrated the Chiefs defence to score their third try in the game with their Flank Cobus Grobbelaar.
Substitute Rory Kockott followed with the conversion to take the scorecard reading 30-31 in favour of Chiefs.
With 8 minutes remaining in the game, Chiefs enjoyed more ball possession and they continuously attacked the Lions half and kept the ball in their half. Chiefs Fly Half Donald scored on the penalty during the 75th minute to extend the lead by four points
and it remained the same until the end of the second half.
Chiefs with a win and bonus point in the match will now take on the Bulls who are coming from three-match losing streak at Pretoria.
