Chiefs sign Sam Cane and Brodie Retallick on a two-year deal: Rugby News
New Zealand conference Super Rugby franchise, Chiefs, have handed over a two-year professional contract to the 2011 International Rugby Board’s (IRB) Junior World Championship winning duo of Sam Cane and Brodie Retallick.
Chiefs have confirmed the signing of the players on a two-year contract in a statement released on their website on Tuesday, July 26.
Chiefs head coach, Dave Rennie, has congratulated both players on signing their professional contracts with the Super Rugby franchise. Rennie further added, “Sam and Brodie were two of the best performers at the U20 World Cup and we are rapt they have committed
to the Chiefs. They both have big tickers, a fantastic work ethic and will hopefully wear the Chiefs jersey for many years to come.”
Chiefs’ Chief Executive Officer, Gary Dawson, has expressed his satisfaction on the development and retention of Sam. He stated his confidence in both Sam and Brodie and hoped they would achieve further success at Chiefs in next two seasons.
Both Sam and Retallick were part of the All Blacks Under-20s squad which won the 2011 IRB JWC title in Italy. Sam’s strong performance in the tournament has earned him a spot in the shortlisted candidates who will contest for the IRB Junior Player of the
Year Award.
Both Sam and Retallick joined the Chiefs Training Group and Development team in 2011.
Reporoa college product Cane has progressed his way up through different New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) development structures. He has developed his skills at Chiefs' Schools Under-18s team and later at Bay of Plenty Rugby Union Academy.
Sam’s hard work has helped him to make his debut for the Chiefs during the 2011 Super Rugby competition.
All Blacks Under-20s and Chiefs flanker, Sam, has expressed his delighted on his first professional senior side contract with Chiefs. He added, “It has been a goal of mine growing up. I got a taste of the environment last season and really enjoyed it. I
believe there are exciting times ahead for the Chiefs and look forward to being involved in that.”
Brodie Retallick has also expressed his satisfaction with his two-year deal. He termed this a good opportunity to play with the senior players and the excellent coaching and training facilities to improve his game further.
