Chieh Cheng outshines Tara Pilven in pre quarter-finals of Victorian International 2012
Women’s Singles campaigner Yu Chieh Cheng enthralled Tara Pilven in the second round of Li Ning Victorian International and marched into quarter-finals on June 29, 2012.
This pre quarter-final tussle proved real test of their mental and physical strength as it prolonged to 50 minutes before ending with final result of 16-21, 21-12 and 21-14.
The lower ranked but talented Taipei girl exhibited great fighting spirit and clutched the honour despite of going down in opening segment of the show.
Meanwhile, the Australian campaigner pocketed full advantage of the home ground at the start but she disappointed the local crowd in closing segments.
In first set of the match, Tara Pilven launched a brisk attack and pushed her rival on the back-foot with three consecutive points after 3-2.
She kept on stepping forward at steady pace and made notable difference by reaching at dominating position of 8-5.
Though, she faltered in next couple of rallies but still managed to end first half with a decent total of 11-7.
Later part of the game completely belonged to Tara as she strengthened her grip over game with 16-10 margin in third quarter and then stamped her supremacy by registering decisive figure of 21-16.
However, she could not carry this momentum in next game of the match as the opposing shuttler put her expedition to halt.
Chieh Cheng, who was underrated earlier in this event, proved her mettle by clinching crucial set with an overwhelming nine-point lead in final total.
She did not show any sign of confusion after first set loss rather her determination proved too much for the higher ranked local player.
She started the campaign in decent fashion and left Tara far behind with 8-3 margin. She did not lose this rhythm all the way to mid game break and placed respectable figure of 11-5.
The Taipei lady ruled the court after interval also and 21-12 score on the board was proof of her dominance in the second set.
