Chien-Ming Wang’s poor outings force Washington Nationals to think over Ross Detwiler - MLB Update
Chien-Ming Wang’s tough time in the season continues as he fares another poor show, costing the Washington Nationals a defeat.
His entry in the season had triggered an essential shuffle-up on the rotation which had resulted in Ross Detwiler being demoted to the bullpen. The decision was taken despite the fact Detwiler was doing the job reasonably well.
Wang boasts great amount of experience. Before he was injured, he was part of the plans which featured him as a significant component of their rotation. Johnson, who is known for sticking to actual plans, regardless of what other options are available, acted
typically and gave the Wang a run right-away on his return from injury.
Interestingly, while Wang dithered on the mound and struggled with his mechanics, manager kept faith in him and did not entertain thoughts of calling Detwiler back on rotation.
However, latest disappointment coming off from Wang may compel manager to start thinking on other options. Therefore, the possibility of Detwiler being promoted for the role emerges.
Since Detwiler has been more consistent with his command, he is a reliable candidate to replace Wang. Not only as starter, but in his current role of being a reliever, he has carried out the job to near perfection.
Not going by the way Wang floundered, Johnson is still optimistic that he will be back to his best soon. He aims to avoid immediate changes.
“I think there’s a lot there,” Johnson said. “It’s my job and McCatty’s job to make sure he gets comfortable. We need to figure it out. It’s getting late. And we will.”
Wang talked about the factor that caused his failure. Despite getting the arms working fine, he commented that he was unable to hit the right spot consistently.
“Overall, my arm still feels good,” Wang said. “I just couldn’t locate the ball very well today. I still need to use my body and try to get my feeling back. Every time we had a bullpen, pitching coach [Steve] McCatty was telling me I need to stay back, on
top of the ball.”
For how long Wang will test the patience of the manager will be interesting to observe in the days to come. Meanwhile, Wang will be h**l-bent to prove his credentials on the mound.
