It is after midnight and we have no 24 hour vet here. He is showing no sign of pain. His eye looks a little swollen and he is tearing. I opened his eye and can see no sign of a irritant. Should I relax and take him in the morning or should I be stressing out (like I am now). Any advice from CHI or similar dog owners only please.

  1. I have a Chihuahua. When her eye is swollen, it is usually because she had an allergic reaction to something she ate (as a breed, they have very sensitive stomaches and skin). If your dog is not showing any signs of itching, pawing, or rubbing his eye, then I would say it is safe to wait until the morning. I would just leave it alone, don't try and clean it or put anything on it anymore.

    Be well.

  2. Take him to the vet please!!

    Better safe than sorry!

He could have gotten a scratch in his eye somehow, it is not usually visible with the naked eye. This type of scratch in his eye can only be seen by using special test by the vet. And if he does happen to have a scratch on his eye, what will happen is the scratch will get worse without treatment, he will keep blinking when he sees the light, and trying to hide in the dark or under the blankets and eventually he will loose the eye because you did not have the proper medicine for it.

This is what happened to my dog once. Her eye got swollen  and she was blinking alot, I took her to the vet and he checked her eye with a special test. He said she had a scratch on her eye. And he said if I didn't bring her sooner and left it alone she might have lost her eye. Anyhow, he gave me medicine for it and she's fine now, cured.

I would take him to the vet.

  3. Does it look like maybe he got stung by something? If that's the case then give him a benadryl and keep watch over him. He should be fine by the morning. As long as he is eating and drinking then it should be no worry. If it's not better by tomorrow or Tuesday then he should be seen but he sounds ok. Good luck.

Let us know how he's doing and if he's okay.

  4. I have a chihuahua.  Wash your dog's eye with a wet wash cloth or cotton swab.  If it isn't better by tomorrow then call the vet.
