What kind of careers would I be able to get into with a degree in Child Development? Is Social Work better? Could I work in an adoption agency with a degree in Child Development?

  1. You can study child developent and use this as a stepping stone to other areas of Child related areas such as physology and socail work. Depending on what you really want to do in your career. I would suggest taliking to some of the professionals in areas your interested in and then decide. Child Development is so broad these days.

  2. child development can get u a job working in a day care center, a public school. it all depends on the level of education you have. I remember taking child development to become a teacher. But it wasn't the only class i took there were several more.

  3. Most adoption agencies are going to be looking for people with a degree in social work.  Now you can do a BA in child dev and then do a two year MSW or you can do a BSW with a minor in child dev. and then do your MSW in one year as advanced standing.  The advanced standing option is only open to BSW's from accredited programs.

  4. Greetings!  My suggestion to you is meet with a program coordinator at your local community college.  They can show you the program they do and also discuss with you the various options you could do in your own community.  If you enroll, you will quickly find that your local ECE community is a very small one and is desperately looking for people to help their respective programs.

One day, when I was at a crossroad, my first wife was establishing an infant home day care.  I became so fascinated with infants and toddlers and with Child development in particular, I enrolled in the community college program.

I now have my AS degree in ECE, have been working in my program for twelve years and am back at school to pursue my bachelor's degree.

If you want a career that will give you tremendous feedback and a strong sense of accomplishing something in your society, this is the place for you. The only caveat is that it is a very low paying industry, but we all can't be CEO's, lawyers and doctors, can we?

    Hope this helps.  Take care.

  5. Child Development degrees are best for those that want jobs in daycare, Preschool, Afterschool care, Director of a childcare center, headstart, migrant programs, etc.

I suggest taking some child development classes and also classes in something else that you might possibly be interested in like social sciences.
