my daughter's first baby tooth has already fallen but it took a good while before it did. her permanent one was growing behind it. we were on vacation away from our dentist and i didnt have the guts to pull her tooth out myself. so now the permanent one is still a little out of place. will it move up by itself or does she need a retainer or braces? how old does she need to be to have braces? she's 6 now.

  1. She can't get braces until all her permanent teeth are grown in.  Wouldn't it be kind of silly to do it now knowing that she is going to lose a ton more teeth?

  2. More than likely it will move into place on its own. ALL of my daughter's teeth came in this way.

Children don't usually start orthodontic treatements until the age of 9--and that's the early end of the range. However, the American Association of Orthodontics recommends a consultation as early as 7. I'd just wait and see if they dentist thinks she needs one, though.

  3. This same thing happened to two of my sons. They are now 15 and 13 and their teeth are perfectly fine with no need for braces. Next time she gets a loose tooth encourage her to wiggle it a lot so it doesn't tighten back up. Otherwise you'll end up with the same thing happening again. I ended up pulling so many of my boys' teeth I should be able to have a dental practice!

  4. It'll straighten up by itself. Most wonky teeth do (my daughter had one that came through 90 degrees from stright, and my son had one which was 5 mm out of line. Both sorted themselves within a few months.

I do find it astonishing how many American kids are given expensive, uncomfortable dental procedures at a young age, when in the UK it would be left until they were fully grown and only treated if necessary then. Of course, in the UK dental treatment is free for kids, so there's no advantage to the dentist in suggesting unnecessary work...

  5. It'll move by itself, that happened to my daughter.
