Question:

Child/Day Care licensing in Virginia?

I'm very interested in becoming a licensed childcare provider. I know there are courses/classes you can take specifically to get a license in child care without having to completely enroll in a college. Does anyone know of anyone who got their license/certification without going to a college for a teacher's degree and where I could go to do this? I'm not looking to run a daycare in my own home, I'd just like to have a license to be able to work at one.

  1. My daycare provider actually just did a search on the net and said she found out that way. She's in Norfolk also & has no college/teacher's degree. She was able to get that done and start her own daycare in a matter of months! From what I remember, she said the certification wasn't what she thought is was (easier) and mostly paperwork & taking a couple of classes (or maybe just one) like an information seminar or something. If the net doesn't help, I'd suggest calling the City of Norfolk Human Resources Office or something like that. I'm sure they can direct you right! Good luck!

  2. First of all we need to know what county you are in.  There are 2 possible ways to get a license, one is from the county and one is from the state.  The major difference is how many children you are allowed to watch.  If you plan to have 6 or more kids, you need a state license.

If you happen to live in Fairfax County here is a great link

The best place to start if you are not in that county is to contact your county licensing office at your county government or specifically health and human services department to point you in the right direction.

A simple google search should yield you what you are looking for and good luck!
