  1. To me it means that a child is developing at an age appropriate level. This is in terms of social, emotional, cognitive and physical. It is age appropriate that a child will experiment with how and which direction he might print his name. If a child doesn't know his colors by age five he could be behind in his development and need extra help. Another child could be reading by three or four but his social development needs time to grow or catch up.

  2. It is the term coined to explain how a child is developing in the following domains:

    cognitive development

    social/emotional development

    language linguistic development

    fine motor development

    gross motor development

for more info on each domain...check out the site below:

  3. Its all about how children develop and learn. It helps you identify where children 'should' be in their development, help you to plan for their needs, and identify areas for development, dependant on their age and stage.

In lots of books development is talked about as PILES, although it is important to remember that every child is individual, and needs to be viewed holistically.

    P-Physical

    I- Intellectual (cognitive)

    L- Language

    E- Emotional

    S- Social

Some experts add an extra S at the end for Spiritual development

There are some excellent books out at the moment, have a look at Child Care and Education (Cache level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education) by Tina Bruce and Carolyn Meggitt.

    Hope that helps a bit

  4. it determines and explains how a child is developing mentally and socially and educationally

  5. Child development is another way of saying how children develop through different stages or how does children grow and learn. There are four developmental domains or the selves:  physical, emotional, social, and cognitive.  In some books they include the creative self.  These domains are connected to one another.  As a child develops in one domain, that domain influences and is influenced by another domain of development. These domains are important in development because they focus on the whole child.  I hope this help.
