The California Dept. of Child Support just sent us a nice little letter stating that they were going to freeze our bank accounts. However, we do not live in California. We live in Puerto Rico and our banking accounts are in Puerto Rico. Can California freeze our account if it is out of the country?

  1. I think you are screwed.

  2. Puerto Rico is a US territory and must obey US law.

In the US fathers pay child support, either willingly or against their will if they are dead beats.

They also have the authority to cancel your passport, garnish your pay, suspended your drivers license or ever issue a bench warrant.   All these things can be enforced in PR.

  3. They did NOT say they would 'freeze' your account.  They said they would CEASE your account.  Puerto Rico is a US territory.  Puerto Ricans are US citizens and US law applies.  You are no more 'out of the country' than if you lived in Washington DC.

  4. Um, did you know Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States? It’s basically a step below a state. I’m pretty sure US law still applies there.

  5. Yes. They can take control of all of your assets until the order is satisfied. PR is under US law. And forget trying to pull all the funds out before they freeze the account. If you try you are commiting a CRIME. Not paying child support will be the least of your problems!!!
