Child afraid to talk to anyone but her immediate family?

I know a little girl who is afraid to talk to anyone except her family. She won't talk to anyone out in public. She doesn't speak in school ever, her teacher has never heard her talk. When she gets home she talks non-stop and seems like a normal child. Its just when she gets around other people that she won't open her mouth. She is afraid to speak. Does anyone know what this disorder is called?

The poor child is shy and there is no need to put a label on her for not wanting to talk to people she isn't comfortable with. My girls are shy like this and they are Bright and highly intelligent little girls. Most children grow out of this stage and labelling them as if something is wrong doesn't help.

My best friend was like this as a child. He was diagnosed as having a form of ADD!! it makes the child very very very shy and unsociable with anyone except their family

   I was this way when  I was a kid.  when I was in kindergarten  someone tried to kidnap me. I didn't talk for a long time afterwards then only at home and gradually   I was able to talk with other people and now I have a normal life.  often if the child had a hard experience they will not talk in public.

My sister is like that, too. Im not sure what the "condition" is called, but I do know that my sister claims to dislike anyone but us. ( shes 12)

My sister was like that when she was younger.  She's just shy.  It could be seen as a good thing because you dont have to worry about her talking to strangers.  She'll outgrow it thought when she gets older.
