  1. The above 2 answers describe gross motor skills.  These are the larger movements made by the arms, legs and/or the whole body.

The other form of physical development is known as fine motor skills.  These are smaller movements made by the body using fingers, hands, lips, tongue.

For example, a pair of scissors could be used by a 4 year old to develp their fine holding skill, and control.

In order to write, they need to grasp (between their index finger and thumb) a pencil.

A baby would use fine motor skills to hold a rattle, but gross motor skills to move around in a baby walker.

Hope this clarifys things for you.... I had to learn all about these when I did my Nursery Nursing and it was something I enjoyed so it stuck in my brain!!!!!

  2. Do you mean such as playground equipment?

Well, take for example the swings. They need to know the way to push and pull themselves  in order to make the swing go. It's great for balance to stay on the swing. Great confidence boost when they can do it on their own. Good for indepence as well.

  3. Climbing frame; uses all muscle groups as child climbs balances, swings, hand and eye co-ordination is developed as child works out where to place hands and feet, balance improves as child walks along the bars etc, promotes self confidence as child climbs further up the frame and performs more complex movements. self esteem gained through experience of the activity and adults praise.
