  1. Actually playing might just get his mind working and ready for school.

Now I am not advocating a lot of video playing before breakfast but it gets his mind moving and working = it takes thought to do the game. It gets him up early and ready to go = cause he wants to play. Gives him a little relax in the morning so the morning at school will be better for him.

  2. When I was in sixth grade, we had a really bad snow storm that caused our school to go on two hour delay for over a week. So everyday we went to school at 10 instead of 8.

I stayed at my best friend's house to wait for the bus and we'd play with her Sega Genesis. Our favorite game was Batman Forever.

Neither of us were distracted during the day when we got to school. I'm 24 years old now, a college graduate and second grade teacher, so I guess I turned out okay from it.

  3. In my response to the origanal question you might want to try educational games. These are less likely to get stuck in his head and if they do he could probably ask his teacher what he's doing wrong, which will then give the teacher an inroad in to assisting him to improve his skills in areas which he needs to improve.

I find that I don't really think about a game unless I keep failing to pass a certain level. This could be an issue but there will probably be other children in his class or at his school/ day care who play who he can discuss soluntions with.

I'd say that if you don't want something to get stuck in his head for the rest of the day try  the educational games (at least if they get stuck in his head there is the possibility of a positive outcome.) -see reason given at beginning of post

  4. We allow our son to play in the mornings before school only if he has gotten up, dressed, ate and straightened his room.  It is his reward for doing what he is suppose to do but we limit it to about 15 minutes.  We also use it as a reward thing if he does what he should in school, follows the rules etc then he can keep playing he doesnt then we take that time away from him.  Just watch what game he plays and dont let it be a fighting one or one that you really have to think about as those tend to stick in the mind more, instead go with a car game or something else in the morning.

  5. I am dead set against it.  they have too many other things to do to get ready for school in the morning.  I also don't believe in TV during breakfast.  they spend too much time watching the tv less time eating which puts us behind schedule.  No distractions until everyone is dressed and ready to go!

  6. Hi, I am used to go to school but now I am Home Educated. I normally play on my PSP 10 minutes in the morning and never daydream thinkind about what could happen next in the game! It may be different with other individuals but I have never personaly been put off by it. It has acctually benn proven that if you play a console in the mmorning it 'warms up the brain'...and if you are playing a tactical or brain game it is even better. I just wouldn't let him play on it constantly. I find it can be quite adiccting but you need to balance yourself....!

    Hope this helps, Jake

  7. I can't give you statistics that will tell for sure a certain number of children experienced poor grades due to early morning video game playtime.  However, I can tell you that, statistically, children who wake up that early do not funciton as well in the area of academics and may even have substantial difficulties in maintaining good behaviour.  It will benefit him to adjust his schedule so that he wakes up later and is more mentally clear during school.  It also is hard to deny that time reading would be a better benefit for him.   Still, since he loves video games, why not use them as a reward and an enticement for good work and good behaviour at school?  You could tell him that when he has finished his homework and if he gets good remarks from his teacher, he may play video games.  That could very likely inspire him to do better in school and it would elmiminate the questions you might have as to whether or not studies in the future will find that video games before school were harmful to many children.  Is his future worth a collection of mere opinions?  One last thing you can ask yourself may help in your final decision.  It may not really be an issue of whether or not video games before school are harmful but rather whether they are profitable.  Could it be more profitable to read a book together or have him read one to you at that time?  Could it be more profitable to have him earn the video games by doing well in school first?  Ultimately, these are things you both must answer and upon which you must both agree.  I wish you much wisdom and joy as you raise your wonderful son!  :)

  8. My kids do nothing but have breakfast, get dressed brush teeth and hair organize their bookbags and walk out the door to the bus.  They get one hour of television/video game/computer time IF they earn it a day.

  9. my 8 yr old does this also, it does help him do what he has to do to get ready faster if he wants time to play that's good for me but now that you asked you have me wondering maybe we both should try taking it away for a week and see what his work looks like and then let him play for a week and see if it makes a difference but yes you are thinking on a good point.it is good to get his mind going earlier, instead of waiting till school.Ill be trying this for my self the rest of this week,if  you have not choose an answer ill let you know what i see on Friday with my son.He was the same, good question though.

  10. I think that I would stimulate the mind and help him focus, however, kids are so wrapped up in video games and computers that they need to get out of the house more. So while playing video games can be good, when its warm, you need to kick them out and let them play outside for a while.
