Question:

Child support for 20 year old high school drop-out going back to school?

My stepdaughter dropped out of high school at 18 & did not graduate. Michigan child support stopped my husband's child support payments when she turned 18. Now my stepdaughter is 20 and she is going back to school to get her GED and an associates degree. Does my husband have to start paying child support again?

  1. No, technically she isn't a child anymore.

if he's nice, and generous, he'll give you/her money from time to time.

  2. no.  child support stops at 18 regardless of the situation...  She can look into financial aid to support her debts.  The only other thing to do is to ask her father if he's willing to help her.

  3. You are an idiot to have to ask this question.  What if your daughter waited until she was 30 years old to get her GED?

Now if your ex was not current with payments before she turned 18 you need to get the back support from him.

  4. Why would he? As long as he is NOT in arrears with child support, then it stopped when she turned 18. But if he has arrears, then he'll have to pay until he's caught up.
