Hi we are due to have our first baby in a few weeks and we have been reading about child tax credits, my hubby works and doesn't get working tax credits yet, but will he get both after our baby is born ? also how long do you have to wait for everything to be sorted out before you get any money through from them ?

Also when my baby is born will I get money for him as well, and how much is that roughly ?

thanks for your help

  1. We started receiving money about 6 weeks after our son was born, so it's quite quick where the government is concerned.

You will get Child tax credits as you are the main carer for your son.  Because your partner is working, if he's eligible it will be him who gets Working tax credits.

The amount you get will be based on your income.

    Maj

  2. You should get Child Tax Credit but Working Tax Credit depends on how much income you get. On our last update it said that we were entitled to £4731 per year Working Tax Credit but then right underneath that it said that the reduction due to our income was the same amount so we end up with nothing!  We bring in less than £30k a year between us so the cut off point is obviously quite a low income. Good Luck!

  3. if you claim as a couple (even if you dont work) and you have a child and between you, you work atleast 16 hours per week you can qualifie for working tax! child tax anyone can qualifiy as long as they have a baby! it is usually around 90 pound per week for child tax until their first birthday then it goes down only my a few pounds! working tax varies as to how many hours you or your oartner work and how much their estimated earning for that year will be!

it usualy takes a week or 2 as you have to send off the babies birth certificate to prove the baby is legal etc!

it deffinatley helps getting both! me and my husnad claim as a couple and he is the only on that works and i stay at home with my 2 little ones (22month son & 9 months daughter)

  4. NOT SURE WHAT STATE YOU'RE IN BUT IT IS NORMALLY A $1000 CHILD TAX CREDIT AT THE END OF THE YEAR WHEN YOU FILE YOUR TAXES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR..IF YOUR HUSBAND TAKES A TAX CREDIT, BY CLAIMING 1 ON HIS W4 FORM THEM HIS EMPLOYER WILL TAKE LESS MONEY OUT FOR TAXES EVERY WEEK AND HE WILL GET LESS MONEY BACK WHEN TAXES ARE FILED. IF HE CLAIMS 0 THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND CLAIMS 1 PLUS CHILD WHEN HE FILES HIS TAXES HE WILL RECIEVE MORE BACK. ONLY 1 OF YOU CAN CLAIM THE CHILD AT DURING TAX TIME..UNLESS YOU FILE JOINTLY..

  5. the working tax credit depends on how much you earn, and doesn't really have alot to do with having children.

the child tax credit you will be entitled to unless you earn over something like £35,000+ a year. i'm not sure , but you may not be eentitleduntil the baby is 1 year old, but dont quote me on it.

after sending off all relevant forms it can take up to about 8 weeks for first time applicants, but will be backdated.

  6. You have to earn under a certain amount to qualify for the child tax credit. I don't remember what it was, but we didn't qualify, i was bummed!! Not sure if the tax rules in 2008 are the same in '07 when we had our baby.

  7. Your best bet is to chat w/ a CPA.  You should be able to find one in your area.  Does your hubby work for himself?  If not, I'm not sure you get $$ right away, but you do save a lot on your taxes as you get to claim your child as a dependent.

    I hope this helps...

  8. Go onto www.entitledto.co.uk that will tell you all you need to know about what you`ll get.

child benefit is about £18.80 per week, i think, and you get that once you have the baby registered.

  9. once yr baby is born and u register him/her then u can send the birth cert off to child benefit and tax credits, it does take a few weeks to sort out (my grandson is 1 month today and they sent theirs off a couple of weeks ago and have not heard yet) however they do backdate it to the date of birth so u wont lose out.
