Question:

Child temperature of 39.6

my son is 3.5 his temperature is 39.6. he is hot to the touch with a fast heart rate he seems to be talking nonsense. he says he is cold and he hurts. i gave him children advil with a cold cloth on his forehead. i brang it down slightly to 39.2. he is sleeping and drinking fluids. is this cause for concern?

i would say 39.6 is very close to being 40 celcius. I would take him to the hospital better be safe then sorry. I have a 3 year old, anytime with high fever like that i always take him to the hospital even if its just a common cold.You just never know with small kids

40.1 is where the child can start to convulse and it may cause brain damage. Get you child to a doctor now, they all have out of hours surgeries.

You need to call the nurse adviser. If it was my son I would be taking him in to see the doctor tonight.

My doctor says anything above 39.1 deserves a call to the doctor, especially if advil isn't bringing it down much.

ilovebob is right. Celsius or Farehnheit? becuase 39.6 F and he's pretty much dead. Sorry for the extremity but...go to the doctor.

Because of the changed mental state I would call the doctor ASAP and let her know about the temp and they way he was talking. IF the doctor can not see him today ask if you should go to the ER then just go to the ER. A temp with change in mental state is a very big red flag os call the doctor right now. And head to the office or the ER now.

Yes, that's a little high. And with the other symptoms I would definitely take him to a doctor. At the very least you should call the doctor's office or clinic and ask them.
