  1. Maintaining confidentiality is utmost in any childcare centre. I have fired staff for breach of confidentiality. That means they took information (either about children, staff, or finances) and discussed it outside of the work place. They are obligated by law to maintain confidentiality at all times. Only the staff are allowed to discuss the child and only at team meetings. This is a very serious matter in any child care setting.

  2. O.K. Shelley I am a pre-school teacher.  Whatever you talk to the parents about - then that is between then and yourself - same as what is in the childrens file.  Any information they give you can be discussed with your co-workers (team) but you can't take it any further.  Basically I work with the parents to decide what is the best course of action for the child as some of the children have severe challenges in their behaviour and sometime help has to be brought in.  Basically do the best that you can to make things easier for the child and get the information from the parents that you may not be aware of - e.g. a change is their marriage status etc.  Can you be more specific as that is a difficult question.

  3. Professional child care workplaces are required by law and by ethical standards to maintain confidentiality about information that comes into their records or that they learn in other ways. This means you don't discuss the affairs of parents or other staff with anyone who does not have a goodreason to know about it.

Without the assurance of confidentiality it is sometimes  difficult to win the trust of parents and children, and fellow workers. What you know can help you give better care, but if you discuss it with those who don't need to know, then you risk not being told anything.

This does not mean that your obligations to report suspected child abuse are below cofidentiaity in priority - child abuse comes first.
