  1. In some states, having a license is the law.  If you are caught without a license, you could be charged or fined.  You could also develop a record that could prevent you from doing things in the future, like getting a license or getting a job in a daycare.

Also, think of the liability problems you could face if something happens to one of the kids while in your care.  It could be something as little as a kid's finger getting cut then getting infected a parent has to take their kid to the doctor.  But serious things happen by accident, and you could be held liable.  Also, and I don't mean to scare you, but sometimes parents abuse their kids and then blame childcare workers.

What you need to do is find out the laws for your state.  A google or yahoo search should help.

  2. You must get licensed. It against the law to run an unlicensed daycare. The licensing department will come to your home and do a home inspection to make sure your room is big enough for a home daycare, that the kitchen and other rooms have been made child safe, and that you have enough room in your backyard, licensing insists that you have a backyard where the children can play-this is mandatory, you will be required to purchase approved playground equipment and safe fall zone areas. Also you will be required to take a signs of illness class at the Health department and be required to get your Health and Sheriff's card and have a TB test done. You will be required to take a food handlers class and Blood and disease pathogens class. You will be required to only have a certain number of children enrolled, most states it's 6-1, unless you have infants with older kids than it 4-1, unless you have an approved helper who is over 18. It is best to a daily schedule and rountine and best to purchase a monthly curriculum. No parent wants to put their child in home daycare where the kids just watch TV all day. Good Luck. Once licensed you will inspected randomly 3 times a year by the licensing department.

  3. A license is more attractive.  Many states offer subsidies for licensed daycares.  Check out your state's website to see what is required.  You'll always have people that don't care if its licensed or not.  You just might need to charge less.

  4. because it is a home daycare , its easy to get a registration and not a license, the difference is that with a registration you can care for 2 full time and up to 3 part time while your application is in process, once you have your application you can care for up to 6 full time and 3 part time, with a licence the requirements are much more and you can care for more than 9 children,, to get your registration you need to be cpr /first aid certified and have your background check, much much simpler that licence, good luck
