  1. A child isn't a tax write off or a way to get extra help. Call your local dhhr if you want to be a government leech.

  2. Yes, she can, but not all the costs. They will only let you claim a percentage of the costs. Last year, I paid $12K in child care but could only claim approx $2500. It might be based on taxable income, but I'm not an accountant, might want to double check that.

You have to make sure, that if the child is in a home care setting, the person claims it as income. If they don't you won't be able to claim it.

You will get the child credit (I think it's 1K-2K per child) at tax time.

I would look into your local Job and Family Services or whatever government program is in your area. They might be help with child care costs or offer suggestions on where to go for child care.

  3. This depends upon where she lives. For tax purposes, she can only claim those for which she is given official receipts, which means the caregiver needs to claim the employment on their taxes, too.

  4. If she wants to go to college, then she will be eligible for free childcare through care2learn. It's a government scheme that will pay up to £160 a week for childcare.

She can apply through this website. Good Luck!

If you live together, then you will be able to claim child and working tax credits, and possibly be eligible for housing and council tax benefit. If you are apart, then she will be eligible for full housing and council tax benefit, child tax credit and income support.

This is all as well as the childcare costs. If you want to see definitively what you will be eligible for check out this one:

EDIT: This is advice for the UK, so if you're American sorry!! And ignore the rude person below me, she clearly didn't read the bit where you said "I work." Your girlfriend is very intelligent to want to go to college, furthering her education will mean a better future for baby in the long run.

  5. There is an additional deduction that she can take on her taxes if she is working and her parents don't claim her as a dependent.  Basically it lets you not pay taxes on $5000 worth of income.  I also know there are ways to get low-cost childcare, but I don't know what gov't agency is responsible for that.  I guess start with the welfare office...
