Well for the last few days now iv been thinking what i want to do with my life. I basicaly mucked up in school from not going and not taking my GCSE's, and yes i regret not doing it all. Lucky for me i found an apprenticeship in childcare what im starting this month. Also im going to do a english and maths course, trying to sort myself out. Everything is going well so far. So once i start my childcare course (learning to be a nursery nurse) i will be doing that for about 3 or 4 years (im only 15 at the moment). What i was wondering is once i have completed that can i go on to becoming a childminder in my own home. I will be qualified with NVQ 1,2 & 3. What else will i need? Im not going to give up on this, Iv already mucked up school im not doing the same again. So please can you give me advice on what else i need?

Many thanks!

  1. you should be fine if the qualification is a recognised one, NNEB or Btec. The council/social services would visit your house and discuss various safety things you may have to do to your home. And you would need to be registered. Ask your local Job Centre for advice

  2. i was the same, not sure i should be answering this 1, but im only doin my NVQ to level 2 cos i was told goin 2 level 3 is more 4 teaching than actuall care (but its beta to keep goin)

i work in a nursery tho im still training, i would speak 2 a careers advisor if its somthin u really want 2 do!!

childminding in your own home is hard work 2 do, they will check your house url need loads of saftey an mayb lots of changes 2!

  3. You will need to be registered with ofsted, find details regarding this process by contacting your local childcare services provider. You will also need to complete a first aid course. And yourself and the other members of your household will be required to complete a crb check. You may want to think about getting some experience in a nursery first as your clients may consider you to be very young and inexperienced to leave their children with you and it is an isolated job but you will be working alongside others in a nursery setting. For someone of your age, you may want to think about how yuou will make friends if you are working in a nursery setting whilst alone at home with children can be difficult. Good luck with your career.
