Ok so i know i want to work with children with mental problems or children who have physical problems. For example children who have been severely burned, children who have leukemia, cancer, etc. I want to be able to interact with these children. I want to be able to be more like a counselor or therapist.I'm not to interested in doing anything with medical. My question is what would you suggest going to school for and how much schooling would it take?

  1. Hi -

If you are going to work with children as a therapist, I believe that you need to get a degree in psychology in college and focus on children's mental health. You will need at least a bachelors.

Your best bet is to talk to someone in adminissions at a college you're thinking about attending and explain what you're looking to do.

I'm in administration, so I'm not the greatest resource for information, but I will tell you our Children's hospital has an extensive mental health program.

And, as the other answerer mentioned, talking to your guidance counselor is a great start. You can get names and contacts from that person in your school. Also if there's a local Children's hospital, just call them and ask for the mental health division and explain what you're looking to do and ask if someone there might be able to sit down with you and talk about it.

    Good luck.

  2. talk to your guidance councelor (sp? lol), and they would definitely know in what direction to point you :-)
