Children's book about a purple pebble??

Question

I have this great childhood memory of a book involving a purple pebble and mice or geckos?? I really can't remember but the illustrations are similar to that of Eric Carle's. Unfortunately my parents did not keep the book and can't remember it either. Does anyone know what I am talking about? I would like to get it for my daughter :) Thanks

I'm not sure what book you are talking about.  There is Sylvester and the Magic Pebble....it's about a donkey who wishes he could turn into a rock (or something like that) and because he was holding the magic pebble, he turned into a rock.  He stayed a rock until his parents eventually found the pebble and placed it on the rock.  He then was able to wish himself back to being a donkey.
