Children's craft for refugee week?

I am doing a storytime for children aged under 6 years and the theme for the week will be refugees (for a tie in for the refugees week June 18-24), does anyone have an recommendations?

Are you kidding me?  What kind of child that age gets the concept of refugees?  But if your center makes you do that I would suggest telling the children that there are other kids that are sad because they don't have a nice place to live like we do and then maybe suggest they may want to draw pictures for them or would they like to come up with a way to raise money and send it to them.  Let the children think up how they can help these children.


  2. you could do crafts related to peace. the concept of a refugee might be hard for a child under 6 to understand. there's a great book out there called The Peace Book by Tod Parr. in it, it says things like 'peace is everyone having a home'. it's really appropriate for preschoolers. then you can talk about what they think peace is and briefly bring in the concept of refugees. ultimately, why we have refugees is a lack of peace. here's a link to peace activities:
