Children riding in front seat?

At what hight and weight is it apporiate for a child to ride in the frount seat of a car with an air bag? He weighs enough to engage the air bag sensor on the passanger side.

  1. Airbags were tested for 5'8" men weighing 180 pounds. Therefore, even shorter women are at risk. Most recommendations suggest that the child be at least 13 and I would think at least 5'4".


  2. I believe the weight is 100 lbs, but I'm not sure about the height. This is also a problem for petite women...my sister is 4"11 and weighs 98 lbs. By air bag standards she shouldn't be in the front seat, but how else can she drive :-)  My husband's truck has an on/off switch for the passenger side airbag just for such incidences.

  4. In order to be protected properly in an accident, a child should be in a carseat/booster until approx. 80 lbs. and 4'9". This allows for strap placement to be at it's most effective safety level. So, if your child is under either of these, he should still be riding in the back seat. I hope this helps.

  5. i say if hes heavy enuf to have the light turn on then he should be able to sit infront.
