  1. Most face painters I know would not charge by the face but by the hour at a birthday party. If you're planning a party for your child and expect to invite 10-20 guests, I would suggest you'll pay upwards of $100 for a face painter. My rates begin at $100 for a minimum of 20 people and then I charge $5 for every person thereafter. If I am at a festival, I charge $5-$10 for full-face paintings, and $1, $2 or $5 for "cheek-art" designs, depending upon the complexity.

The Caran d'Ache paints the other people wrote about are easy to use but they can be very messy, too. I wouldn't advise buying them. The city of Aurora offers these paints for parents and children at the KidSpree festival in Aurora that I supervise. There are better paints available, ones that offer far better coverage. If you're looking for a high-quality but relatively inexpensive set that you can use yourself and will last a long time, I strongly recommend you check out the Face Painting book from Klutz. It comes with a six-color palette from Wolfe Brothers and tons of ideas to get you started. It's available from most national booksellers and, of course, from the Klutz website. When I got started painting in 1988, I bought this set and began using it in my work as a childcare provider. Please contact me via e-mail, I be happy to be of greater help to you. 2. I have actually used those water color pencils that fluflu66 talked about.  We had a birthday party with about 20 children  (approx. 3-4 years old) and it was a lot of fun and it was not dangerous at all.  They are not hard, they are non toxic and they are easy to use.

  3. pretty dangerous if they're young unless its professional painters like at knott's or something.

  4. $2 for a full face paint

$1 for a butterfly or one item

  5. Do this yourself and save $ and have a waaaaaaay better time. There is a water color pencil made by Caran d'ache. You can find these at art stores (sometimes hard to find so go to a real art store)  You dip the pencil in water, blot on a paper towel then draw.  The color pallets available are amazing and the color transfer is excellent.  Get some water cups, paper towels, mirrors ( be safe!!) and let it gooooo.  If these children are 3- then they can do this to each other/themselves with some guidance regarding eyes etc.  If you are planning on doing this for $ as a business then you can hardly go wrong with these pencils.  They are reusable, come in a metal tin, can be touched by the children and last forever.  Good luck.
