  1. Why use books when you have the world wide web???

  2. I really haven't read any books on the subject, but if you want a resume of what happend, you should "Search" the following question in Yahoo Answers:

What was one change brought about in Chile by Salvador Allende?

The best answer by HOMER is very accurate. My answer on the other hand was erased by someone who felt offended:

I just love when people make foolish statements about things they don't know about.

when I was 13 years old I went to live with my parents from my mother's side on March 13 1973 (6 months before Pinochet). I found my cousins divided into righties and lefties nevertheless all my aunts & uncles were against Allende. I just came after living 4 years in San Francisco California, I was used to the american way of living and found myself making long lines for hours with my aunt and my 73 year old grandmother in order to buy Tissue Paper, Toothpaste, sugar, rice, milk, etc. We never saw meat in those 6 months, only once when a couple of uncles were going to celebrate their 25th wedding aniversary. They had to smuggle a dead calf inside a fruit truck at 4am to Santiago in order to make the BBQ. Riots were common in those days. One night we were visiting some family the same night one of the biggest protest march was occuring downtown. My aunt, my brother and I had to walk all the way back home because there was no transportation, so we walked alongside with the protestors. We were at Providencia Ave. when someone started shooting from a building and a person 2 yards ahead of us got hit by a bullet, and that set up the vandalism against stores and the cuban & russian embassies. This was the wonderfull world of Allende's Chile.

After setember 11 1973, Pinochet built the METRO transport system (10 years of construction), reduced poverty, set up an exporting country and Chile has now the best economy in south america  with the biggest GROSS INTERNAL PRODUCT in Latin America.

Need I add that Allende also had a huge lack of personality, becoming a puppet for Fidel Castro & Leonid Brezhnev, who were highly interested on spreading comunism to South America.

Could you believe that Fidel Castro went to Chile on November 1971 and stayed there for 3 months? Putting words in Allende's mouth during Political meetings, it was very unconfortable for Chileans.
