Chimichangas... do they taste better fried or baked?

I am making ground beef chimichangas today and wanted to know if they taste better fried, which is how they are usually made, or baked? I know baking them is healthier but I dont want to skimp on taste. Will baking them make them less tastier?

  1. I love chimichangas they are my favorite Mexican food! I think you should fry them even though that is not as healthy as baking. Best of Luck.

  2. Fried, but always healthier baked.

  3. I can make them tasty and healthy :0)

This is how I make mine:

    Ground Turkey

    Wheat Flour Tortillas

    Onion, Garlic

    Queso

    Canola Oil

    Baking String

    Taco Seasoning

Dice onion and put in skillet with a little canola oil when they start to turn clear add a spoonfull of garlic, then add turkey (promise no one will know!) Then add 1/4 Cup of water and 1/2 pack of Taco Seasoning or all depending on how you like them.

Warm Wheat Tortillas so they dont break when you fold them, spoon as much meat you think will fit add a tiny bit of queso to make the meat semi-sticky, roll and tie with baking string, repeat to all of course.

Have your oil heated ( I have a fry daddy) and drop 2-3 in at a time or how ever many you can fit, turn once pull out when crispy brown.. Canola Oil is the healthiest for frying and they do taste better fried.

IF you want to bake them rub the outside of each Chimi with a small amout of oil and broil them turning them over as they start to look crispy, it will give you the same crisp of a fry and you only use a tiny bit of oil on each as well rather than the oil leaking into the meat.

Remove pour hot queso on top YUMMY Sometimes I will put diced tomatos and lettuce on top of them with sour cream vs: Queso.. EVERYONE love these.

  4. Oh, honey, everything tastes better fried, and especially deep fried!  But it's so much better for you if it's baked.  *sigh*

  5. I have only had  them fried (my fave mexican food) not sure how they would turn out baked, maybe if you gave them a light spray with butter flavored or olive oil baking spray? I have done them in a cast Iron skillet with some butter flavor spray and they were ok.. but no the same as fried.

  6. Try using a different oil to fry them in a low saturated kind.extra virgin olive oil is pretty good.. But frying is the best. Because you want that nice crunch.

  7. they HAVE to be fried.  it won't have the crunch if you bake them.  I don't think it will take away from the flavor, but consistency is key.
