Question:

Chimp strength? Is it relative to other animals?

My question is based on the idea that primates like chimps and orangutans are up to five times stronger than humans. Why is this the case? Is this the case for all animals? Could a chimp not just punch a lion in the face and rip its head off? Surely with one swing of its paw the lion could probably do the same right? Or are the animals realtive strengths taken into account, thus this scenraio wouldn't happen? Any ideas?

  1. All of the Great Apes are extremely strong.  But, they are basically vegetarians, with a little bit of an omnivorous diet now and then.  Therefore they have no claws and only grinding teeth in the back, and cannot run very fast.  They are not equipped as a predator.

Their strength will not do them much good against the speed, agility, and power of a predator, especially when predators are equipped with such sharp claws and teeth designed for killing.

Many predators kill primates.  Like the Harpy Eagle and the Monkey Eagle of South America.  Leopards, Tigers, and other cats kill and eat primates too.
