  1. Ezzy, our stadiums are already built up (New Wembley, Lords, etc) while the Chinese had to do it from scratch.  So we are in a far better position to use our budget.

4 years is a long time, I'm sure we can create a good atmosphere for the people and the athletes.

  2. These were very good games, at a cost of $45 Billion. So how on earth will our games match up to that when we get to £9.5 Billion then we close the account on them, "oh well, sod it michael phelps will have to just use a normal swimming pool, we can't afford it" and erm for the gymnastics we'll just get a couple of crash mats from the P.E cupboards!" Our games are going to be a p**s poor event i can see it now, our opening ceremony will just be a bunch of c**p musicians that have one good song in them. It will end up being a c**p music festival and the government will proclaim it a huge success. What history will we put into our event? "Here comes the float of Margaret Thatcher here, pissing on the British economy. Oh and yes right on cue here comes fathers 4 justice". When the pride of a nation is concerned no cost should be too great, we pay so much tax there should be enough for a bloody olympics here every year just from fuel taxes alone!

To SkyeR, you can't possibly think that our will be any good, of course the events will be the same but i still feel the whole quality of the games will be pathetic, you know exactly what im talking about the opening and closing ceremonies will be lacklustre with the most extravagant show being a few brightly dressed people swinging from the roof of Wembley Stadium. Don't get me wrong i would love it if we could match the Chinese in exuberence. But as ususal it will be a tea and sandwiches on the lawn affair with us.

  3. According to the IOC president, these weren't the best ever but they were "truly exceptional" which means they were pretty good compared to others.

London is a veteran host of the olympics (3rd time it has hosted them). They shouldn't have a problem.

  4. It's the athletes, their performances and competition that really make the games, not the packaging of the event. The UK should have no trouble attracting the best athletes in the world.

Hey Ezzie -- you make me laugh....looking forward to seeing the Margaret Thatcher float.  Seriously... Beijing had to make a grand statement to the world..... the UK does not.  The competition is between the athletes, not the hosts.

  5. I agree that China is the BEST games ever . Why I say this, its because their originality stood out from the rest of the crowd. Zhang Yimou collaborated with the best performers and had many creative ways to promote BeiJing Olympics. I think it's unique compared to others. Great Britain doesn't have to follow up with China, since it's already so Great..... I'm sure they will come up with something. I hope that it doesn't offend asian viewers. Anyhow, the Olympics is highlighting the events and upcoming sports. But then, the opening ceremony is very important to give us all a good impression.

  6. They cant so they have to take a different direction, modern, more upbeat etc. Think street dancing, modern singers with a twist of British history. If they're totally different then they cant really be compared. They also have a much smaller budget then China which already puts them at a disadvantage. I think we will pull it off and it will surprise a lot of people/

  7. The best ever? I don't quite think so, or really see how that argument could even be made... unless it's by someone that's been around for all of them..

As far as I am concerned, It was the united states' best medal haul since 1904 (if you don't count the USSR boycotted games in '84). So I guess you cold say it was pretty darn good for my country at least in that respect.

The UK is a great nation with a lot of tradition. They will have NO PROBLEM pulling off an equally exciting games. I'm pretty sure the press will certainly have a better time in London... (just a hunch.)

  8. The China Olympics was the MOST AMAZING THING I HAVE EVER SEEN! I can not describe how beautiful the ceremonies and the sports and events were. Its sooooo sad everything is ending. I can't believe it! I don't want it to end. Honestly, I'll be very surprised if the U.K can do better than that! I mean I was in shock how well everything went it was the most beautifulest thing ever!
