  1. The answer to how important it is ....is that depends.

English is the world's most common language.....lucky for us.

Speaking more than one language is a good thing, but only speaking one is not a bad thing.

It is all individually driven based upon where you live, what the demographics of the surrounding area might be, what you do for a living, etc.

WHile it is never bad to be multi-lingual.....it is also not necessarily a requirement to lead a happy, successful life either.

  2. Ni How Ma? I would go with Chinese (Mandarin)! But being married to a Chinese woman for 25 years I already started!

Spanish? We do not need Mexico! Mexico needs us! Let them learn English!

  3. China's stock market has dropped over 50% in the past year.  A billion of their people are still impoverished peasantry, the textile plants have laid off almost half their workers this past year, etc.  Your arguments are now full of holes.

I have sat in meetings with a Norwegian, a Singaporean, a Japanese, and a couple other assorted nationalities, and we all spoke English.  Nothing would ever get done if we had to round up a Norwegian-Japanese translator and all the rest.  Any executive in international biz or trade speaks English.  It is the world's most commonly spoken language (when you include native and non-native speakers).

All those immigrants to English-speaking countries are only handicapping themselves and closing themselves off from a wide variety of opportunities by not learning to speak English.  They expect others -- even tourists there for 3 or 4 days - to speak their language in their own countries, so they'd better learn English if they want to live in an English-speaking country or move up in th business world.  And if they want the privileges of citizenship, they'd better learn enough of the language to read the ballot and fulfill the obligation of jury duty.

  4. It'll be very important to speak chinese for everyone!

dirty martini, the worlds most common lenguage is mandarin.

  5. Nope, I make tons of money and only speak English, but feel free to learn or speak any language you want, just don't speak them to me. I live in the U.S., we speak English here.  Join us.

  6. In my travels for work and pleasure I have learned that English is the Business language, however I have come across Chinese nationals in countries like Mexico, Hungary and the Czeck republic and all of them spoke the native language were as we are acostume to expect the other party to understand us.

I do belive that new generations should command more than one language, I have the fortune to have parents that care for that and i speak German, English and Spanish all of which have come in for help at one point or time.

Chinese is the future though theres no doubt about that. the Asian century is upon us

  7. China blocked itunes last time I was there, I'm not worried about them taking anything over, they have issues.  Learn Chinese or Spanish, no thanks, not needed.

  8. English is fine.

  9. Learning a Chinese dialect is pretty difficult, but if you have already mastered more than one language it should be easier.  It took me 10 years to truly feel bilingual and bi-literate.  It is a lot of work, but with dedication and immersion it is possible.
