Hey this is for a paper I am writing:

What is China's side of the conflict? What do they have to say to back up the fact that they think they legally own to Tibet? The whole Panchen Lama things and all the destruction they've done I mean they're not just doing it all for the h**l of it so what is their motive?

  1. China believes that they have historical claims on Tibet. In the 7th century a.d, a Tibetan king married a daughter of the Chinese emperor. Some claims stem from that marriage. Other claims come from the Mongolian conquest of Asia. They controlled China, and Tibet, though the methods were a bit different. Anyway, under the Yuan dynasty, the Mongolians basically had control from the 13th century until the Ming dynasty. When Tibet was in trouble at various times, they did indeed call on China for military aid, but they never agreed that China had sovereignty over them.

When the British invaded Tibet in 1904, called the Younghusband expedition after the individual in charge, the British dealt with Tibetan leaders to create a treaty, not with the Chinese. That ticked the Chinese off because Tibet acted as a buffer state between them and British-owned India. The British, however, were more concerned about the Russians at that time.

When Mao took power in 1949, he wanted to consolidate any kind of power that he could, and Tibet, as someone mentioned before, does have a lot of resources, and contained a great deal of material wealth, gold, silver, and so forth, mostly in the monasteries and temples.

I would like to point out that while a lot is made of the destruction that took place in Tibet, people should keep in mind that the destruction was during the Cultural Revolution, and much of China was destroyed in the same way. The goal was to rid China of all old things, and there was pretty much mass destruction throughout all of China.

As for the Panchen Lama, China would very much like to control the spirituality of Tibetans and has attempted to do so through control of those leaders.

There are a number of books you might be interested in reading, provided your paper isn't due next week or something. Check out "The Snow Lion and the Dragon", a short book by Melvyn Goldstein, or his longer two volume history of Tibet. There are also some interesting biographical/autobiographical works out there, written about or by individuals who were directly involved in things during the Chinese takeover of Tibet.
