Six best-of-nine matches were played in total on the first day and some interesting match-ups were seen. Here is an overview of the matches.
Wild card round matches
The Whirlwind, Jimmy White, withdrew from the tournament due to some visa problems, which was a huge disappointment for his fans. It is being said that he made a trip to China but then went for some exhibition in Thailand and was not allowed back into the country later. However, Chinese player Tian Pengfei enjoyed a walkover, and will now face two-time Masters Champion Mark Selby in the last 32.
The upset of the day was that of 1997 world champion Ken Doherty, who lost to newcomer Li Hang by a frame score of 5-1. Doherty, who also didn’t qualify for the Crucible this year, was a heavy favourite for the match but crashed out of the tournament. However, it was quite an achievement for local star to see off the experienced Irishman.
The shoot-out king Nigel Bond, who outplayed Jin Long by a frame score of 5-3, has set up a potential clash with the current world number one and tournament favourite John Higgins in the last 32. Kurt Maflin, who dominated all the players in the qualifying rounds, has also beaten Cao Yupeng by a frame score of 5-3. He will now face Chinese number one Ding Junhui in the last 32.
The Fen Potter, Joe Perry, after Ousting Li Yan by a frame score of 5-2 has also gone through to the last 32 and will face the Magician, Shaun Murphy. While the Dumbarton destroyer, Marcus Campbell, who registered a 5-3 win over Mei Xiwen will face Mark Allen.
Last 32 round matches
The best match of the day was seen in the last 32 between Stephen Hendry and Matthew Stevens, where seven-time world champion Hendry whitewashed his opponent by a frame score of 5-0.
The Welsh Dragon Stevens, who won the Champion League snooker title last week, could only pot nine points during the whole match. However, the King of Crucible, Hendry showed some magnificent breaks of 100, 93, 75 and 62.
The other match in the evening session was between Neil Robertson and Barry Hawkins. World champion Robertson emerged successful with a frame score of 5-1. It was another spectacular match in which the players produced back-to-back century breaks of 124 and 128.
