China Open Men’s competition: Highlights from Monday
Fifth seed Tomas Berdych along with Fernando Verdasco, who was seeded number six in Beijing, failed to make it to the season ending ATP World Tour Finals in London. Both players bundled out of the China Open 2010 on Monday.
World number 51 Michael Berrer from Germany got the better of his Czech foe, Tomas Berdych and thus registered his second victory in fourteen clashes versus top ten players with a three setter win on Monday. The final match score was 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. The clash concluded in a time period of two hours and twenty one minutes in Beijing.
Michael, who was also a finalist at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors earlier in February, withstood a total of ten aces from Tomas’ racquet for his seventh victory in 2010.
The Argentinean, who is currently ranked number six in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals, as a result of this loss, has dropped down to a year record of 42-20.
Meanwhile, world number 52 Philipp Kohlschreiber handed Fernando Verdasco his second successive first round defeat on the ATP World Tour with a two setter win over the Spaniard. The final match score was 6-2, 7-5. Fernando also lost in round two last week in Bangkok at the hands of Becker. He is also looking for a spot at the season ending finale on the second occasion in a row in his career.
"I am still number eight; here I do not lose any points. I think that it is more important next week in Shanghai, firstly since it is a Masters 1000, and secondly, because for the entry I lost back in 2009 in the first round. So I only hope to have a nice week now to practice, and I will try my level best to be in my top form in Shanghai and earn all the points I can there to try to remain inside the eight best contenders to be in Finals,” added Verdasco.
The 26-year-old Kohlschreiber, who was a semi finalist at the Open de Moselle, improved to a match record of 35-20 for 2010. He will now meet John Isner from the United States of America who was also given the ATP Most Improved Player of the season award back in 2009. He made his way into the next round after getting the better of Tsung Hua Yang, a wild card entrant in eighty eight minutes on Monday. The final match score was 7-6(5), 6-3. The world number 20 two enjoys a record of 1-3 in tour-level finals.
In other action, Mardy Fish defeated his Serbian tennis foe, Janko Tipsarevic in two sets in Beijing. The final match score was 6-2, 7-6(5). The clash concluded in a time period of one hour and fifty three minutes on Monday. The professional tennis player from America blasted a total of ten aces and converted three of nine break point chances on Monday.
It was Mardy’s 40th victory in 2010, which has seen the 28-year-old grab two ATP World Tour crowns at Atlanta Tennis competition, where he defeated John Isner and at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis tournaments, where Mardy overpowered Rochus in straight sets.
The only American to lose on Monday was Sam Querrey, who was toppled by Frenchman Gilles Simon in three sets. The world number six Gilles continued his good form with a 6-3, 3-6 and 6-2 victory over Sam Querrey on Monday. Gilles, who captured his seventh ATP World Tour crown a week ago at the Open de Moselle after defeating Zverev, converted seven of nine break point opportunities in a clash highlighting 12 breaks of serve.
World number 21 Sam Querrey was contesting his first clash since falling to Santiago Giraldo in the American Davis Cup versus Colombia back in September.
