China Open Premier Super Series: Pui Yin Yip stuns Juliane Schenk in the opening round
Pui Yin Yip, an emerging shuttler from Hong Kong, advances into Women’s Singles second round after beating the higher ranked Juliane Schenk of Germany in the opening round of the 2011 China Open Premier Super Series, on Wednesday, November 23, in Shanghai.
The ace shuttler in Hong Kong, Yin Yip played terrific badminton against the World Number Six, Schenk and won the set with a close margin. She took 66 minutes to win the fight in three games and reduced the deficit in head-to-head meetings by reaching at
3-5.
Schenk was not expecting such a severe treatment from the lower ranked rival. She played well but not enough to chuck out Yin Yip, who was impressive throughout the rubber-set match.
In the first game, Yin Yip showed no respect to her opponent and won the set with a decent margin. However, she failed to finish the match in straight games as she lost the second set by a narrow difference. However, the final fight was absolutely wonderful
when both ladies remained neck-to-neck. Nevertheless, Yin Yip appeared as the winner in the final game with a dramatic margin.
In the first game, both ladies played to their maximum potential and employed all skills to take a comfortable lead. However, both remained close until the score reached at 17-17. At this crucial stage, Yin Yip played smartly by executing some fascinating
strokes and won the set by a margin of 21-18.
In the following set of this match, Yin Yip surprised the local crowd by playing on a different level against the sixth seed German and reached at 11-7 until the break. She remained ahead of her rival in the whole set until the concluding phase as Schenk
played well and levelled the score by reaching at 19-19. Yin Yip failed to win the finishing points and lost the game with a 19-21 score.
In the deciding game, it was the Hong Kong shuttler who took a three-point lead until the interval by reaching at 11-8. She was leading the game with a huge margin of 16-9, when German shuttler started to narrow the gap and levelled the score at 20-20.
The match became interesting as both shuttlers missed their match points until 23-23, when Yin Yip remained successful in scoring two consecutive points and won the set with a 25-23 score. The overall result of this thrilling fight was 21-18, 19-21 and 25-23.
