China Open Premier Super Series: Wang Yihan overpowers Petya Nedelcheva in quarter-final showdown
China’s Wang Yihan advances into Women’s Singles semi-final after beating Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva in the quarter-final showdown in the 2011 Li Ning China
Open Premier Super Series, in Shanghai, on Friday, November 25.
The World Number One and the second seed in the event, Yihan struggled hard to get rid of the spirited Bulgarian in a thrilling contest which lasted for 56 minutes. The Chinese consumed 56 minutes to stamp her victory over her rival and secured a semi-final
berth in the Women’s Singles category.
The Chinese took the first game by a one-sided difference without any considerable fight. However, she failed to continue her impressive run in the second game because the Bulgarian played well this time and took the game to level the set. In the final set,
Yihan spared no chance for Nedelcheva to dominate the game and won it with stunning difference.
In the first set, both ladies remained close in the opening rallies. However, Yihan built a good lead until the interval as she reached at a comfortable stage of 11-6. After the break, she continued her impressive play and maintained her performance to finish
up the opening game with a terrific 21-11 score on the board.
In the second game, the higher ranked Chinese remained successful in setting up a good lead until the break when she reached at the 11-8. Nevertheless, Nedelcheva started to accelerate her speed while remaining positive and focused in the match. She levelled
the score by reaching at 15-15.
Yihan tried to dominate the rallies but her opponent was quicker this time. The Chinese failed to finish the ending points and lost the set with a margin of 18-21.
In the final set, both shuttlers played attacking badminton in the opening points of the third game and reached at 3-3, when the Chinese lifted up her standard of play and scored 8 consecutive points and reached at 11-4 until the one-minute break.
In the second half of the final set, the higher ranked Yihan continued her killing performance and finished the game with a one-sided margin of 21-9. She emerged as the winner in three games with a margin of 21-11, 18-21 and 21-9.
