China Open Women’s singles Tournament; Caroline Wozniacki wins the title
World number one Caroline Wozniacki won the 2010 China Open Women’s singles title on Monday after getting the better of her Russian tennis foe, Vera Zvonareva in a three setter clash in Beijing. The final match score was 6-3, 3-6,
6-3. The victory came as the sixth career title for the Dane.
The professional tennis player Caroline from Denmark was seeded number one at the Premier-level competition in Beijing. She had previously defeated in three of her past five clashes with the second seed Russian Vera Zvonareva,
including their most recent meeting in the final four at the year’s last Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York.
The match she played yesterday was also a tough one as Vera fought well till the end, however the twenty year old Dane won at last, getting the only break of the decisive set to take a lead of 2-0 and holding her serve until it
was over on Monday. The clash concluded in a time period of two hours and four minutes in Beijing.
The Dane tennis star who recently achieved her career high ranking of world number one after winning her quarter final clash at the China Open last week said that she is extremely happy and satisfied with her overall performance
and game in the last couple of months and is really looking forward to continue her form for the rest of the season.
"I thought I played a really, really good match. Zvonareva was playing really well too. Everything is working for me at the moment. I have got to believe I can beat anyone. I feel in great shape and I am looking forward to Doha.
I came here wanting to do a good result. I knew I could become number one if I won a few rounds. I am very happy how everything has turned out,” added the new number one after her victory on Monday.
Caroline had never triumphed in a single clash at the Toray Pan Pacific Open or the China Open competition prior to this season and came in Beijing at 0-3. However, now the Dane has won both the trophies in back to back weeks.
Caroline has had a phenomenal year so far and is the 20th number one contender in the women’s history after replacing Serena William of America.
The win was Caroline’s 59th of the season, which currently leads the tour. Vera stands at number three for clash victories in 2010 with number forty six behind Flavia Pennetta, who has won a total of forty nine matches this year.
Caroline also leads the WTA tour for most trophies in 2010 with her total of six namely New Haven, Ponte Vedra Beach, Montreal, Copenhagen, Tokyo and now Beijing. Next highest for trophies is the Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters, who has won a total of four
including her United States Open in New York.
Vera’s impressive results, which also include her final appearances this season at the grass court Grand Slam tournament and the United States Open, also rewarded the Russian on the rankings this week and therefore she has jumped
from number four to number three in the world, meaning by that the American tennis sensation Venus Williams has dropped down to number four by the WTA.
"Rankings do not matter too much to me, because I knew if I play well I will win matches and the ranking will come. If I go on court and think about everything but my game, I won't be able to win any match and my ranking would
not be there. I just think about what I have to do on the court to win,” added the Russian.
