China beat Northern Ireland to claim the 2011 PTT-EGAT 2011 Snooker World Cup – Snooker news
China have won the 2011 PTT-EGAT 2011 Snooker World Cup as they defeated Northern Ireland by a frame score of 4-2 in a best-of-seven frames final match.
The 2011 Snooker World Cup was being held at the Bangkok Convention Centre in Bangkok, Thailand.
China, consisting of Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo, stormed into a 3-0 lead with the help of an 84 and 46. However, in the fourth frame Ding lost control of his emotions by missing an easy blue ball and when the chance presented itself, Gerard Greene slotted
a mind-boggling century break of 115 to reduce the deficit at 3-1.
Northern Ireland also took the fifth frame as Mark Allen produced a modest break of 69 to help his country come within one frame at 3-2. However, it was of no use as Ding and Wenbo made a classy break of 89 in the following doubles frame to finish the match.
The 2011 Snooker World Cup, which had a prize of $200,000 for the winner’s chest, has been brought back to the snooker calendar after a time of 15 years and therefore Ding was very delighted about it for his country.
Ding told the media he was very young when the World Cup was last held. He said it is a rare tournament and one does not get much chance to participate in it.
“When the last World Cup was held I was nine and had only just picked up my first cue a few months before,” said Ding. “I'm very proud of China. We've made a lot of friends at this tournament. You don't get many chances to play in this tournament and this
is the first time I've played in it but I hope I can play in this more times and win more times.”
Ding also admired his teammate Liang Wenbo who played very well throughout the tournament.
While speaking on his inclusion, he remarked, “Liang played very well and better than last season. Last year there was a lot of pressure on him but you need to understand he will come back and play better and better.”
