China defeats Dominican Republic to top Pool D: FIVB Volleyball Women´s Junior World Championship
The Eduardo Dibos Coliseum saw China take on the Dominican Republic on Sunday, July 24, in pool play of the FIVB Volleyball Women´s Junior World Championship in Lima, Peru. The match reached its close after the Chinese had made a clean sweep over the Dominican
Republic.
Despite the fact that the Dominican Republic lost the game in three back to back losses, each set of the game was closely contested. The first set was tough and it was not easy to predict a clear leader out of the two teams. The second set saw the Dominican
Republic slacken their attack a bit but they were fiercely competitive in the third. At the end of the day, China had won the match at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-21 and 25-23.
The Chinese player Yang Zhou shared his feelings at the press conference after the match in the following words: “The victory was very difficult, but we deserved it.”
The opening set was going in favour of the Dominican Republic as they were able to secure themselves the advantage at 5-3. However, it was the Chinese team that was in a leading position at the first technical time out. The Dominican Republic did not give
up and reached the second technical time out on their terms at 16-13. The Chinese team kept on the chase and tied the game at 16-16 to move up and take the lead. Dominican Republic halted the progress of their opponents and got the lead at 20-20. Nevertheless,
it was the Chinese team that bagged the first set of the game at 25-23.
The second set saw the Chinese take the lead after a bit of a struggle. The Chinese were able to extend their advantage to 10-6 and still keep the lead at the second technical time out at 16-10. Despite the fact that the Dominican Republic tried hard to
upset the Chinese, they lost the second set at 21-25.
Playing with a loss of two sets, the Dominican Republic gave their best in the third set and kept the game close all through but the Chinese prevailed in winning the set at 25-23.
Dominican Republic coach Warner Pacheco made the following comments: “We lost concentration and we hope to improve. We will play against anyone and we do not have to be afraid of it.”
On the other hand, Dominican Republic captain, Gabriela Reyes, shared these words: “We were distracted and we made a lot of mistakes. We have to get better in some aspects.”
Both Dominican Republic and China have qualified to move on to the second round of the tournament that is going to start from 26th July. However, the Chinese team has finished the first round standing at the top of the rest of the three teams
in Pool D.
